Functional Web Design

By Mark Ohanesian | Owner/Proprietor at ODS

At Ohanesian Digital Solutions (ODS), I treat web development as a business tool, not a trend.

Too often, design is treated as an exercise in technology or aesthetics, when it should actually be an exercise in cost-effective execution of a marketing strategy.

Speed to Clarity

The primary goal of any digital asset is to provide “Digital Legitimacy”. This means that when a visitor lands on your site, they should understand what they are looking at instantly. The design must be functional, driving users as quickly as possible to the information they need with zero questions. Whether it’s finding a service or filling out a quote form, the path should be seamless and unobstructed.

The Power of Familiarity

Innovation is great, but not at the expense of usability. I believe in an “accessibility-first” approach that leverages patterns users already know. People spend most of their time on platforms like Gmail, TikTok, and Instagram; they are conditioned to recognize certain symbols, navigation styles, and layouts. By mirroring these familiar patterns, we reduce the cognitive load on the user, making your site intuitive from the first click.

Aesthetic Freedom within Functional Bounds

A functional philosophy doesn’t mean a boring website. Your brand’s visual identity can range anywhere from corporate minimal to punk-inspired. However, regardless of the “skin,” the skeleton must remain:

  • Navigable: The hierarchy and structure must be clear so users never feel lost.
  • Accessible: Content should be easy to find and interact with across all devices and platforms.
  • Functional: The site must drive the specific actions—like lead generation or sales—that meet your business objectives.

Design should never get in the way of the user’s journey. It should be the engine that drives them toward their destination.
